Seo-in Lee

Seo-in Lee's practice looks at the moment just before change, when form and meaning have not yet been settled and other possibilities remain open. She works through natural landscape, from the understanding that everything is in constant flux and nothing exists in a finished state. Working across printmaking and painting, she moves along the boundary between abstraction and figuration: her images shift between landscape and wall stain, forest and mist, wave and horizon, without arriving at a single reading.

Rather than depicting a particular place, she layers several viewpoints within one image, drawing on the shifting viewpoints of East Asian landscape painting, so that the eye travels through the work rather than resting on its surface. The textures particular to printmaking, the density of ink and the feel of the paper are central to her work, and both prints and paintings are made in series, each work standing on its own. She studied printmaking at Hongik University, Seoul, and completed an MA in Print at the Royal College of Art, London.
