Photography and mixed media on organza

Based in Seoul, Korea

Jinyoung Lee working on a large organza piece in the studio
Jinyoung Lee

Jinyoung Lee works between photography and painting. Plants, flowers, the sky and clouds are her recurring subjects, but in the finished work they appear faint and indistinct, worked through several processes until the image holds light rather than detail. She has made photographs on transparent ambrotype glass plate negatives and built them up in layers of acrylic, transparent photographic paper and hanji, so that a flat image becomes a shallow, layered space.

In recent works she combines painting and photography on translucent silk organza and nylon mesh, sometimes printed at large scale and hung so that the layers separate in the room. She describes the result as an organic landscape, and her starting point as the belief that nothing in the world is entirely new: what she finds was always there, unseen. She studied Media Arts at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) and composition at Chugye University for the Arts, Seoul, and has held residencies in Singapore, Mongolia and Korea.
