Choungha Lee’s painting practice explores sustained perception through the accumulation of thin, translucent layers. Working through repeated bodily gestures, she builds surfaces in which earlier traces are continually transformed, blurred, deepened or partly obscured, yet remain present within the painting. Rather than moving towards a fixed image or conclusion, the layers hold different moments together, leaving meaning and recognition open.
From a distance her paintings read as near-monochrome fields; up close they reveal shifts in colour, depth and brushwork. This changing experience invites a way of looking that resists quick identification and brings the process of perception itself to the fore. For Lee, sustaining perception is not only the subject of the work but a method that shapes both how a painting is made and how its surface is seen. She completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London, in 2026, after a BA in Contemporary Art at Konkuk University, Seoul.
